Cognates are defined as words that have a common etymology and often share similar meanings across different languages. This connection arises because these words are derived from the same root, making it easier for language learners to recognize and understand them when encountering them in a new language. Cognates can often facilitate the learning process since learners can leverage their existing knowledge from their native language to acquire vocabulary in a second language.

The other options, while they speak to different aspects of language and vocabulary, do not accurately capture the essence of what cognates are. For instance, a word commonly used in everyday conversation is more about language use rather than etymological relationships. Similarly, a word that exists only in formal writing pertains to formality and context rather than to the connection between word origins. Lastly, a word that has completely different meanings in different languages is often referred to as a false cognate and highlights misconceptions that can arise, which contrasts with the true nature of cognates that maintain similar meanings due to their shared roots.
